This research was conducted in order to determine the effect of alternative teaching methods used on academic success in primary mathematics classes. Meta analysis method was used to gather the experimental work in which alternative teaching methods and teacher – centered method of teaching were compared. Within the scope of the research, 344 doctoral and master's dissertations were examined. Inclusion criteria were determined and a coding form was prepared for the collection of data. 74 studies carried out between 2005 and 2011 were selected in accordance with the inclusion criteria. As a result of combining the studies, the effect of alternative teaching methods used in elementary mathematics classes on academic success was found to be 0.887. This effect size is seen to have a major impact when compared to the classification that Cohen (1988) made. As a consequence of the research, alternative teaching methods used in elementary mathematics classes were found to be more effective than the teacher – centered method of teaching in terms of academic achievement.
