This study presents results of indoor radon measurements and some analysis to
investigate seasonal variations of radon concentrations in dwellings over two
consecutive years, 2010 and 2012, in downtown Eskisehir, Turkey. During the first
year (2010), data were collected in 516 dwellings using LR-115 track detectors over the
three month periods to represent four seasons (winter, spring, summer, and autumn).
The detectors were placed so that there was one in the living room and another in the
bedroom. The results clearly showed seasonal differences in radon concentrations being
higher for winter and autumn seasons than the spring and the summer seasons. Yearly
average indoor radon concentrations range from 25 to 422 Bq/m3. Furthermore in this
study, indoor radon concentrations with respect to the floor level were analyzed,
seasonal and yearly results were compared, seasonal variation of radon concentrations
was estimated with a sinus function, and error estimations were calculated.
In the second year (2011), measurements were performed in 825 dwellings over
twelve successive three months periods. During these periods, the detectors were
distributed to dwellings in the first half of the month and collected 3 months later for the
analyses. The measurements were used to derive a set of seasonal correction factors
specifically for Eskisehir. For this, two different seasonal correction factors were
estimated and the two results were compared. The first seasonal correction factor was
calculated by using the seasonal measurements obtained from years 2010 and 2011, the
missing data were estimated by fitting the data with a sinus function. Seasonal
correction factors obtained from measurements associated with four months varied from
0,7 to 1,3. The other set of seasonal correction factors calculated using the results of 12
month radon measurement periods. The seasonal correction factors varied from 0,55 to
1,45.
In this study, for the sake of completeness, radionuclide activity concentrations
in 10 soil samples collected from the study area using high-efficiency gamma ray
spectroscopy method were also measured. |
