In this study, it has been investigated the usability of α-sepiolite residues caused
from meerschaum carving and industrial β-sepiolite as adsorbents in removing nickel
ion which is an important pollutant and a heavy metal, from aqueous solutions. First of
all, the influences of thermal and acid activations on the nickel adsorption were
investigated, and there were no positive effects of both activation processes on the
nickel adsorption. The effects of adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, initial
concentration and temperature on the adsorption of nickel ion onto α and β-sepiolites
were investigated using a batch method.
The optimum adsorbent dosage was determined as 0,6 g sepiolite in 50 mL
nickel solution and optimum pH value was 6. The equilibrium was reached in 480 min
for α-sepiolite and 360 min for β-sepiolite.
It has been determined that the adsorption process obeyed the Langmuir isoterm
model and the pseudo second order kinetic model. For α and β-sepiolites, maximum
Langmuir adsorption capacities at 45°C were determined as 23.92 mg/g and 12.33
mg/g, respectively. Also, it has been observed that the adsorption process was
spontaneous and endothermic, and the randomness was increased.
As a result, it is considered that α and β-sepiolites can be used as efficient and
economic adsorbents for the removal of nickel ion from aqueous solutions.
