This thesis was focused on the synthesis of coordination polymers by using
thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylate as anionic linker and eleven bis(imidazole) derivatives
(four of which was synthesized for the first time) as neutral organic linker and Zn(II)
and Cd(II) ions as node. The syntheses of the complexes were carried out by
hydrothermal method and 2 two dimensional (2D) and 11 three dimensional (3D)
coordination polymers were obtained. The structures of synthesized complexes and new
neutral ligands were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopies,
thermal and X-ray single crystal and X-ray powder diffraction analyses. Hydrogen
adsorption performances of the all complexes were determined with Grand Canonical
Monte Carlo (GCMC) molecular simulation method. Moreover, thermal,
photoluminescence and topological properties of the complexes were investigated.
As a result of studies, metal ions and metal clusters with thiophene-2,5-
dicarboxylate ligand generated one and two dimensional structures and these structures
with bis(imidazole) derivatives were extended two or three dimensional structures. It
was determined that paddlewheel and parallelogram type secondary building unit (SBU)
were occurred in the complexes and the geometries of the complexes were square
pyramid, tetrahedral, pentagonal bipyramid and octahedral.
According to topological analysis results of the complexes, complexes exhibited
two fold 3D+3D→3D parallel interpenetration, racemic two fold (1+1) 3D+3D′→3D
parallel interpenetration, four fold 3D+3D→3D parallel interpenetration, 2D+2D→3D
parallel polycatenation and two dimensional layer. According to photoluminescence
results, the emission bands of complexes shifted the blue as compared to those of free
H2tdc. In the thermal analysis studies performed in a dry air atmosphere, in the first
stage, the water molecules removed from the complexes containing water molecule and
in the second stage, neutral ligands were completely or partially decomposed. In last
exothermic stage, remaining organic ligands completely burned. The final
decomposition products of complexes were identified as ZnO and CdO. The study at
pressure of 30 bar and 298 K with GCMC simulation method showed that the amount
the highest hydrogen adsorption was 0.6929 mg/g.
