In this study, 1, 5 and 10 wt% organo montmorillonite, 5 wt% montmorillonite containing polyvinyl chloride/clay nanocomposites prepared via solution bending method and 1, 5 and 10 wt% organo montmorillonite containing polyimide/clay nanocomposites prepared via in situ polymerization. The purpose of this study to obtain new materials which has a homogeneous distribution of clay layers in the polymer matrix and with superior properties compared to conventional composites. Therefore, the dispersive component of the surface energy and surface acid-base properties of materials and components were determined by inverse gas chromatography (IGC) at the infinite dilution region. At all the temperatures studied, it was observed that as the amount of organo montmorillonite in the polyvinyl chloride and polyimide nanocomposite increase, there is an increase in the dispersive component of the surface energy and KD/KA value. Those surface properties which are difficult or even impossible to characterize with other common methods are important for the evaluation of potential interactions of polymers, polymer composites, and its different components. In order to determine the IGC operating temperature range, thermal changes of prepared materials were examined with DSC analysis. Then changes in the structure of the nanocomposite materials and its components were interpreted from the spectrums obtained from Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Support (filler) material distribution in nanocomposites was determined from the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging, and x-ray diffraction diffraction (XRD) pattern.
