Recently, transparent conducting oxide materials have attracted great attention because of their potential applications in technology and science. Especially, CdO is attracting attention with its popularity in optoelectronic applications. In this work, CdOfilms have been produced on microscope glass substrates by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at the substrate temperature of 275±5 °C and the effect of annealing in different gas atmospheres (oxygen, nitrogen and argon) on some physical properties of these films has been investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns have shown that all of the samples are polycrystalline and the sample annealed at nitrogen atmosphere has improved structural properties. Thicknesses and optical constants of the films have been determined by Spectroscopic Ellipsometry. Also, it has been seen that annealed samples have higher refractive index values than as-deposited CdO film. Absorbance spectra of the films have been taken and optical band gap values have been calculated using optical method. It has been determined that CdO films have optical band gap values between 2.337-2.475eV. It has been found that electrical resistivity values of the films are between 6.69x10-3-1.82x10-2 Ωcm using four probe technique. In this work, electrical resistivity values comparable the ones in literature have been attained with the films obtained by an economic technique. Surface properties and roughness values of the films have been investigated by Atomic Force Microscopy. It has been seen that samples annealed at nitrogen and argon atmospheres have tighter and smoother surface than others. Finally, we think that, annealing in nitrogen atmosphere allow the production of alternative CdO films for technological applications.
