In this study, the removal of nickel and lead ions from aqueous solutions by
adsorption using manganese oxide coated sepiolite was investigated. Optimum
operating conditions for the removal of nickel and lead were determined. The effects of
adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, initial solution concentration and temperature
parameters on the adsorption yield were investigated. For both ions kinetic, isotherm
and thermodynamic analyses were carried out. Desorption conditions were also
examined.
The optimum adsorbent dosages were determined as 0.2 g and 0.02 g for nickel
and lead, respectively, for manganese oxide coated sepiolite in 50 mL solution and the
optimum pH value was 6. The adsorption equilibrium was reached in 720 minutes for
nickel and in 960 minutes for lead.
It has been determined that the nickel and lead adsorption processes obeyed the
Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo second order kinetic model. For nickel and
lead ions, maximum Langmuir adsorption capacities at 45 °C were determined as 37.31
mg/g and 261.85 mg/g, respectively. Also, it has been observed that the adsorption
process was endothermic and spontaneous.
Consequently, it is considered that the manganese oxide coated sepiolite can be
used as an efficient and economic adsorbent for the removal of nickel and lead ions
from aqueous solutions.
