Surface modifications of nanosized silica particles to get polymer grafted hybrit systems is getting great attention in these days. This can be attributed to the fact that it provides a unique opportunity to engineer the interfacital properties of these modified particles; at the same time the mechanical and thermal properties of polymers can be improved. In this study, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was used to modify the surface of silica nanoparticles via the "grafting from" approach. The surfaces of silica were modified using surface initiated ATRP to get homopolymers and diblock copolymers brushes on the surface. A series of superhydrophobic poly(3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (PMPTS)-grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles were prepared by surface-initiated ATRP (SI-ATRP).
The synthesis of related structures were carried out in five-steps: (1) The activation of silanol group (-OH) on the surface of SiO2 nanoparticles, (2) the synthesis of amino-functionalized silica nanoparticles, (3) the synthesis of 2-bromoisobutyrate-functionalized silica nanoparticles, (4) the synthesis of PMPTS-grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles, (5) the silica core in PMPTS-grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles was removed by treatment with hydrofluoric acid (HF) to get polimer hallow spheres.
In order to notify polymerization just after initiator immobilization on the surface of silica and the change with HF treatment were investigated by using transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR).
