In this study jet impingement cooling method which was one of the advanced
cooling methods for gas turbine engine, was investigated. The parameters of jet
impingement cooling system were determined and the effect of these parameters to total
cooling rate were observed. Ansys Fluent was used for this observation. Models were
prepared for the detailed cases tested in literature and the correctness of the calculations
was observed. After the validation process, models with the same geometry were solved
with denser boundary layer and shear layer mesh and smaller element heights to specify the
effect of mesh distribution to the solution. As a result of solutions, effect of mesh
distribution to “y+” value and effect of “y+” value to the results were observed. Then, one
row of four jet rows impinging to a flat target surface in a nozzle guide vane of a gas
turbine engine were simulated due to the operating conditions. In the scope of geometry;
metal which was in contact with the air at 1500 K temperature and 800 kPa pressure was
cooled via the air at 500 K temperature and 400 kPa pressure. Channel height, distance
between jets and Reynolds number were chosen as parameters affecting cooling
performance for specified problem. Three different channel height value as 2D, 3D and 4D;
three different distance between jets value as 4D, 5D and 6D and three different Re number
value as 4000, 5000, 10000 were used for the solutions. In addition to these, using SC03
same cases were solved using predefined correlations for gas turbine applications. As a
conclusion, the thermal performance of jet impingement system was compared using two
different finite element program with different parameters and the parameters for the best
result were specified. Accordingly, highest heat transfer coefficient values were obtained
for channel height as 4D, distance between jets as 6D and Re number as 10000 in finite
volume program; on the other hand channel height as 2D, distance between jets as 4D and
Re number as 10000 in finite element program.
