Energy consumption is one of the most important indicators of the development
level of the countries. Today, crude oil, natural gas and coal (fossil fuels) have the largest
shares of energy production. The windling of the fossil fuel reserves and environmental
problems resulted from their combustion is increasing the approach to the renewable
energy sources rapidly. The production of liquid fuel and activated carbon from biomass,
which is among the renewable energy sources, is the aim of this study.
In this study, Paulownia (P. elongata) tree which is a forest biomass was chosen as
a source of biomass. In the first phase of the study, the pyrolysis of wood was carried out
in the fixed bed reactor under various conditions in order to increase the production of
liquid fuels and chemical raw materials. The pyrolysis of raw material was performed in
the static atmosphere and the effects of the heating rate (10, 50°C/min) and the pyrolysis
temperature (300, 400, 500, 600°C) on pyrolysis product yields were investigated. The
pyrolysis of the raw material was performed in the nitrogen atmosphere and the effects of
the sweep gas flow rate (50, 100, 200, 300 ml/min) and the particle size (0.224-1.8 mm) on
the pyrolysis conversion and product yields were investigated. In the catalytic pyrolysis,
the effects of the catalyst (sodium carbonate, ZSM-5, sepiolite) and the catalyst ratio (%
10, 20, 40, 60, 80) on the product yields were investigated. In order to elucidate the
structure of the obtained liquid product, the FT-IR, 1H-NMR and GC-MS spectra were
taken, thermal and elemental analyses were performed and the heating values were
determined.
In the second stage of the study, the production of activated carbon by chemical
activation of phosphoric acid from paulownia wood was achieved, the effect of the
impregnation ratio (1-4) and carbonization temperature (300, 400, 500, 600°C) on the yield
of activated carbon, BET surface micro/mesogopore area and total pore and
micro/mesopore volumes were investigated.
