There is a need for collision warning systems in railway systems. In this thesis work, a system that senses a collision threat and assists the driver on this matter to increase driving safety in railway vehicles is designed. This system utilizes GPS, odometer and accelerometer as inputs and a graphics display unit and speaker as outputs. A Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication method is selected to communicate with other vehicles and non-moving units. A packet format is constructed for physical layer. Necessary methods for ensuring data security and sensing data loss are also developed.. The brake distance calculation method for the vehicle to track its own state is determined and the decision-making algorithm is used to produce system’s outputs. The system produces different outputs according to to the threat levels that are calculated from the position information of the vehicles and non-moving units. The system is tested with different scenarios under a simulated environment. As a result of the simulations, the designed collision avoidance system has been observed to provide expected reactions in the way it was designed.
