The main scope of this thesis is to design a digital controller to achieve the high performance output for UPSs that are operated under nonlinear loads. In the context of the design to be made, the analytical model of both the inverter power stage and the control system were obtained followed by the determination of the circuit components to be used in the inverter power stage. The digital control system for the inverter was designed in the discrete-time domain. The designed inverter system was simulated using PLECS simulator in order to analyze the output characteristics and therefore verify the design before the implementation step. Finally, a prototype inverter at 6 kVA was implemented for experimental evaluations. The control system was implemented in TMS320F28335 floating point DSP microcontroller made by Texas Instruments.
The test results demonstrate the successful operation for the designed controller. The dynamic response was always measured less than 3% during load transients and the total harmonic distortion was measured less than 1% under no-load, less than 2% under linear full-load, and less than 3% under nonlinear full-load.
