In this study, the removal of nickel and cadmium ions from aqueous solutions by
adsorption using iron oxide coated sepiolite was investigated. Batch experiments were
conducted for both metals to determine the optimum removal conditions. The effects of
adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, initial solution concentration and temperature
parameters on the adsorption yield were investigated. Adsorption isotherms, kinetic and
thermodynamic analyses were carried out for both ions.
For 50 mg/L initial concentration, the optimum adsorbent dosages for nickel and
cadmium were determined as 0.10 g/50 mL and 0.05 g/50 mL, respectively. The optimum
pH was found as 6 for both ions. The adsorption equilibrium was reached within 720
minutes for nickel and 960 minutes for cadmium.
It was determined that the nickel and cadmium adsorption processes obeyed the
Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum
adsorption capacities for nickel and cadmium ions at 25°C were found as 46.95 mg/g and
98.04 mg/g, respectively. In addition, it was observed that the adsorption process was
endothermic and spontaneous in nature.
Consequently, the iron oxide coated sepiolite can be used as an efficient and
economic adsorbent for the removal of nickel and cadmium ions from aqueous solutions.
