Torrefaction is a thermochemical process performed under an inert atmosphere at a low heating rate in the temperature range of 200-300°C. When this process is applied to biomass with lignocellulosic structure, the competitiveness and quality of the products obtained by torrefaction as biofuel can be increased significantly.
In this study, the improvement of the biomass properties of laurel shavings with the torrefaction process was investigated. Two parameters, temperature and time, were determined for the experiments and the effects of these parameters on laurel shavings torefaction were investigated. Torrefaction was carried out at four different temperatures: 210°C, 230°C, 250°C and 270°C. Torrefaction time was determined as 15 and 30 minutes for each temperature. In order to determine the properties of the solid product obtained at the end of torrefaction and to compare it with the raw biomass; proximate, ultimate, FTIR and TGA analyzes were performed. Apart from this, the upper calorific value analysis was made for each laurel shavings and from the results obtained, it was examined how much the energy they contained was increased.
Moisture, volatile matter, ash and fixed carbon contents of each torrefacted laurel shavings were calculated by proximate analysis. It was observed that the fixed carbon content of the solid products obtained with increasing torrefaction temperature and time increased and the amount of volatile matter decreased. With the ultimate analysis, it was observed that the carbon content of the products obtained increased and the hydrogen and oxygen content decreased with increasing torrefaction temperature and time in accordance with the literature.
The temperature ranges and maximum decomposition temperatures of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in the structure of the torified biomass were determined by TGA analysis performed on raw laurel shavings and laurel shavings obtained by torrefaction for 30 minutes at different temperatures. These results were also supported by the presence of chemical bond structures determined in the FTIR charts used for functional group analysis
