This study aims to introduce mathematical modelling problems to 6th
grade students and explore their cognitive modelling processes which they present while
solving mathematical modelling problems.
Method: In the study, which explores cognitive modelling capability of 6th
grade students who encounter mathematical modelling problems for the first time,
qualitative research methods are practiced and case study pattern is utilised. Research
was performed in a school in the city centre of Eskişehir with a whole 6th grade class.
Study consists of two stages as pre-practice and main-practice. At pre-practice stage, 3
mathematical modelling questions from literature were asked to students to introduce
them to mathematical modelling problems. After students became familiar with
mathematical modelling problems, the cognitive modelling cycle was introduced and
study proceeded with the main-practice stage. At this stage the researcher asked the
students 3 mathematical modelling problems based on their mathematical knowledge
and social environments. The data gathered through audio and video recordings,
researcher notes and study papers are analyzed under Borremeo Ferri’s cognitive
modelling perspective that built the theoretical framework of the research.
Results: At the pre-practice stage, which was the first part of the research, the
reasons for the difficulties the students, who encounter mathematical modelling
problems for the first time, experienced are defined as; “Teacher we couldn’t
understand!” dilemma, need for extra knowledge, not reading the problem sufficiently,
not being able to write a verbal expression mathematically, lack of fundamental
mathematical knowledge and positioning the teacher as the verifying mechanism. It was
determined that the difficulties the students experience decreased owing to the
familiarity with the modelling problems they got at the pre-practice stage. At the second
4
stage which is the main-practice part of the research; the cognitive modelling capability
of all groups on 3 mathematical modelling problems was studied, and it was observed
that their cognitive modelling capabilities developed through the process, and the
students’ knowing mathematical modelling problems and gaining familiarity with said
problems resulted with increase of scores on the scoring table produced to assess their
solution processes.
Conclusion and Suggestions: At the pre-practice stage; it is determined that
students experience difficulties in solving mathematical modelling problems due to 6
reasons, especially not understanding the problem. At the same time, it is determined
that the pre-practice stage contributed to identifying mathematical modelling problems
of students and it has prepared the researcher and students for the main-practice process.
It is observed that by identifying modelling problems students have made progress at
the main-practice stage which forms the second part of the research. However it is
identified that interpretation and verification steps, which constitute the last two steps of
the cognitive modelling cycle, are ignored at the solving process. Performing prepractice
to introduce the modelling problems to the students who haven’t encountered
the mathematical modelling problems before and get them accustomed to the process,
introducing the modelling cycle to guide them at the solving process, preparing
structured solution papers to make following modelling cycle easy for students and
performing group studies at modelling problems are suggested
