E itimdeki yenilikçi yaklaşımlarla, fen retim programında bazı
becerilerin ve yetkinliklerin kazandırılması günümüzde nemli hâle gelmiştir. De işen
fen programının hedefledi i becerilerin kazanılması, fen retiminin niteli inin artması
bakımından nem taşımaktadır. Fakat programdaki konu ve kazanımların
retilmesinde; bazı fen konularının rencilere zor gelmesi, nceki renmelerle
ba lam kurulamaması, günlük hayatla ilişkilendirilememesi, renilenlerin yeni
durumlarda kullanılamaması gibi pek çok sorunla karşılaşılmaktadır. Bu nedenle,
alternatif y ntemlerle fen dersini işlemek, retmenler için zorunluluk hâline gelmiştir.
Popüler bilim, bilimin her alanından karmaşık bilgilerin daha basit dille
anlatılma şeklidir. Çocuklarda merak duygusu uyandıran, bilimsel araştırma yapmaya
y nlendiren, problem ç zme, eleştirel, mantıksal ve matematiksel düşünme becerileri
kazandırabilen içerikler arasındadır. Bu bakımdan popüler bilim içeriklerinin (kitap,
dergi, belgesel/diziler, bilim içerikli filmler, etkinlikler vb.), e itim- retimin niteli inin
tekni i kullanılmıştır.
Karademir (2020) tarafından geliştirilen Popüler Bilime Y nelik Tutum Ölçe i
kullanılmıştır.
2
“Ö retmenlik mesle i ba lamında popüler bilime y nelik tutumları” ve “Popüler bilime
3
Ayrıca retmenlerin popüler bilim içeriklerini derste kullanmaları teşvik
edilmesi ve EBA (E itim Bilişim A ı)‟ya tüm rencilerin yararlanabilece i farklı tür
ve içeriklerde popüler bilim yayınları (kitap, dergi vb.) eklenmesi nerilmiştir
It has become significant to provide some skills and competencies in
science teaching program with innovative approaches in education. Acquiring the skills
targeted by the changing science program is important in increasing the quality of
science teaching. However, in teaching the subjects and the objectives in the program,
many problems such as some science subjects being difficult fort he students, not
being able to setting a context fort he prior knowledge, not being able to relate to daily
living and not being eble to use what has been learned in new situations are
encountered. For this reason, teaching science with alternative methods has become a
necessity for teachers.
Popular science is a way in which complex knowledge from all fields of science
is explained in simpler language. It is among the contents that arouse the curiosity of
children and enable them to make scientific research, improving problem solving,
reading, logical and mathematical and critical thinking skills. In this respect, it is
thought that popular science contents (books, magazines, documentaries / series, movies
containing science, activities, etc.) might be effective in increasing the quality of
education. Therefore, using innovative methods such as the contents of popular science
plays a major role in achieving the goals of the science curriculum. By taking this into
consideration, it was aimed to examine middle school science and classroom teachers'
perspectives and attitudes towards popular science.
Method: The design of this research was determined as a mixed design in which
qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Semi-structured interview technique
was used for the qualitative aspect of the study. In the quantitative aspect of the study,
5
the Attitude Scale Towards Popular Science developed by Uçar and Karademir (2020)
was used to collect the data.
For the qualitative aspect of the study, semi-structured interviews were
conducted with 7 science teachers and 7 classroom teachers. For the quantitative aspect,
a total of 473 teachers were selected, 175 science teachers, 298 classroom teachers
working in different provinces of Turkey in the 2020-2021 academic year. Descriptive
analyzes, independent groups t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were
performed for the independent variables in the quantitative data. On the other hand for
qualitative data, the findings obtained and examined by descriptive analysis, were
interpreted depending on the research questions.
Results: According to the qualitative and quantitative data in the study, it was
found that science teachers' attitudes and perspectives towards popular science were
higher than classroom teachers. "Attitudes towards popular science in terms of personal
development", “attitudes towards popular science as a science teacher” and “attitudes
towards popular science” in the comparison between the teachers with a seniority year
of 1-5 and teachers with a seniority year of 16 or more; a significant difference was
found in favor of the teachers with a seniority of 1-5. Moreover, in comparison between
the teachers with a seniority year of 6-10 years and those with a seniority year of 16
years or more; a significant difference was found in favor of the teachers with a
seniority of 6-10. According to the qualitative data in the study has been determined that
as the years of seniority in teaching increases, the attitude and the perspective towards
using popular science in lessons decreases. A significant difference was found in favor
of female compared to male teachers in terms of gender in their “attitudes towards
popular science as a science teacher” and “attitudes towards popular science” (total
scores). In addition, no significant difference was found between science and classroom
teachers in the terms of the place of duty. According to the findings obtained by the
research, all results are interpreted and necessary suggestions are given.
Conclusion and Suggestions: Conclusions and Recommendations: According
to qualitative and quantitative data, it has been concluded that science teachers
compared to classroom teachers have a higher rate of following and using contents such
as popular science books, magazines, web sites and applications, films and
documentaries.
6
It is among the results achieved that as the seniority of classroom and science
teachers increases their attitudes towards popular science decreases and they use
popular science contents less.
Among female and male teachers; it has been concluded that female teachers has
higher attitudes towards popular science than male teachers and they use popular
science contents more.
In addition, it is recommended to encourage teachers to use popular science
contents in the classroom and to add popular science publications (books, magazines
and so on) in different types and contexts to the EBA (Educational Information
Network) that all the students would benefit from
