The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the concreterepresentational-
abstract teaching strategy presented by the direct instruction method in
teaching the skills of addition, subtraction, and tens and ones building to a student with
special needs studying in the general education class. Also, it was aimed to determine
whether the student used the skills in the company of another person and another
environment after she acquired the skills and whether she continued to use the skill after
the teaching was completed, and finally, the social importance of the study.
Method: In the study, multiple probe with probe conditions across behaviors
model, one of the single-subject research models, was utilized. The study was carried out
with a seven-year-old female student who attended a general education class and had a
diagnosis of ASD.
Results: As a result of the research, it was determined that the participant acquired
the mathematics skills taught with the concrete-representational-abstract teaching
strategy. It was determined that these skills continued two, three, and four weeks after the
teaching ended. When the generalization findings were examined, it was seen that the
student could generalize the mathematics skills to another environment and person. Social
validity findings show that there are positive opinions about teaching mathematics skills
with concrete-representational-abstract teaching strategy.
Conclusion and Suggestions: In conclusion of the research, it was seen that the
concrete-representational-abstract teaching strategy presented by the direct instruction
method was effective in teaching addition, subtraction, and tens and ones building skills
to students with special needs studying in the general education class. In line with the
results of the research, it is recommended to those responsible for the education of
