Wastewater from textile, paper, and some other industries contains residual dyes that are not readily biodegradable. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are alternative techniques for destroying dyes and many other organic materials in wastewater. These processes usually involve the reagent of UV/H2O2, UV/O3 or UV/Fenton for oxidative degradation of pollutants. Semiconductor photocatalysis is a newly developed advanced oxidation process that can be properly applied to dye contaminants to degrade.
Metal oxide photocatalysts have received increasing attention due to their possible application to the degradation of environmental organic pollutants and conversion of solar energy. TiO2 is one of the most important semiconductors due to its low cost, low toxicity, photocatalytic activity, conservative nature and stability against light illumination. In addition to these properties, the ability to photocatalytic decomposition of organic materials has been applied in the environmental industry, namely organic pollutant treatment. Anatase has higher photocatalytic activity and has been studied more than the other two forms of TiO2. However, the wide band gap (3.2 eV) and high electron-hole recombination ratio of TiO2 limit its use. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the best semiconductors for photocatalysis reaction. It is chemically and biologically ineffective; stable in terms of chemical corrosion and photo-corrosion; and it is cheap. In addition, when TiO2 comes into contact with water, its surface is hydroxylated and the hydroxyl groups are the source of the strong hydroxyl radical, which can oxidize most organic compounds to CO2 and mineral acids.
In this thesis, nano-sized TiO2 thin films on glass substrates were created by using the Thermionic vacuum arc system and their photocatalytic properties were investigated
