In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the relationship between the rational drug use of pregnant women and determining their health literacy level.
Method: The research was carried out with pregnant women who applied to Family Health Centers affiliated to Ankara Sincan District Health Directorate between 31.07.2019 and 30.09.2019. As a data collection tool; The Questionnaire containing the socio-demographic and pregnancy-related information of pregnant women, the Rational Drug Use Scale to measure the rational drug use of pregnant women, and the European Health Literacy Scale to evaluate their health literacy. The data were collected by the researcher using face-to-face interview method. In the study, according to the results of the normality test of the data, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, Pearson correlation test, and linear regression tests were used.
Results: In our study, the average age of the pregnant women was 28.1 ± 5.2 years, 60.0% of them had a high school or higher education level, 70.0% of their income was equivalent to their expenses, 92.6% of them had social security, It was determined that 14.1% were working and 91.4% lived in nuclear family. It was determined that 77.7% of the pregnant women got 35 and above points from the rational drug use scale and had 38 ± 4.3 points average. A significant difference was found between education level, total number of pregnancies and living children, reading the drug package insert, checking the expiration date of drugs, forgetting the drugs used continuously, using the prospectus as a source of information about drugs and rational drug use scale score average (p <0.05). Health literacy general score average of pregnant women is 26.3 ± 8.5. Between education level, income level, employment status, family type, total pregnancy and number of living children, reading the drug prospectus, checking the expiration date of drugs, forgetting the drugs used continuously, using the prospectus as a source of information about drugs and health literacy scale average significant difference was found (p <0.05 for each). A positive significant relationship was found between the rational drug use of pregnant women and the health literacy scale average score (r = 0.375; p <0.05). At the same time, it was determined that the average score
vii
obtained by pregnant women from the health literacy scale affected the level of rational drug use knowledge (p <0.05).
Conclusion: In our study, it was revealed that pregnant women had the knowledge of rational drug use and had a problematic-limited level of health literacy. Increasing health literacy level of pregnant women increases and affects the level of rational drug use knowledge. Midwives and other health professionals need to enrich their educational opportunities in order to evaluate and raise the rational use of drugs and health literacy of pregnant women
