v
tasarlarken bu asimetrik ilişkinin sermaye akışı üzerinde yaratabileceği olası farklı
etkileri hesaba katmalıdırlar
One of the main objectives of the macroeconomic policies of the countries is
to ensure balanced and sustainable growth. Global financial markets, which are
liberalized and integrated, increase the mobility of capital and the role of financial
markets in ensuring macroeconomic stability has become more important in recent
years. This study aims to empirically examine the relationship between exchange rate
and stock market after financial liberalization in Turkey. In this context, the
relationship between BIST-100, Bist Sınai, Bist Teknoloji, Bist Service and Bist Mali
indices and the exchange rate is analyzed using monthly data for the period 2002-2020.
In order to determine the symmetric or asymmetric relationships between the
variables, the series are separated into their positive and negative components. In the
study, the causality relationship between the variables is questioned by both Hacker
and Hatemi‐J (2012) symmetric causality test and Hatemi-J (2012) asymmetric
causality test. According to the findings, there is a causality relationship from the
positive components of the exchange rate to positive components of the Bist100, Bist
Service, Bist Mali, Bist Sınai and Bist Technology variables. There is causality from
the positive and negative components of the real exchange rate to indices other than
the Bist Technology index. These findings provide evidence that the relationship
between exchange rate and stock market returns may be asymmetric. Therefore, when
vii
designing exchange rate policies, policy makers should take into account the possible
differential effects of this asymmetric relationship on capital flows
