The aim of this study is to examine the process of choosing the types of
graphs that will represent the data group of the eighth grade students. Also, it is aimed to
identify the errors made in the process of creating graphics.
Method: In this study, the case study model, which is one of the qualitative re search design types, was used. The study was run with 30 eight grade students studying
in a secondary school in 2017-2018 academic year in Eskisehir. An achievement test cre ated by researcher and consisting of five questions was used as a data collection tool. This
test was applied to all samples during two different course sessions (40 mins of each).
Following the assessment of the test, clinical interviews were conducted with the identi fied students. Each of those interviews took approximately 10 mins.
The data were analyzed in two parts. In the first part, the acceptability of students'
reasons for choosing graphics was evaluated. Besides, thematic content analysis method
was used for the reasons stated by the students. In the second part, the drawings were
evaluated and frequently repeated errors were determined.
Results: It can be mentioned that 50,66% of the students have sufficient infor mation about the type of representation they have chosen and that they know the superi ority of the graphics. Students who use the correct notation type, but give the wrong rea son, are 10% of all students. It has been identified that reasons for choosing column chart;
data group suitability, visual appeal and predisposition, that reasons for choosing a line
graph; suitability for change and data suitability, that reasons for choosing a circle chart;
percentage emphasis on data, visual appeal, proportioning, avoiding other impressions,
that reasons for choosing a binary column chart; data compliance and visual appeal, that

reasons for choosing a histogram; data group size, editing requirements and ease of inter pretation. The most common mistakes are; the axes are not named, the zero is not seen as
the starting point, and the positive value is placed on the vertical axis, the values are
written too large or small (from top to bottom) to leave the first range too large or too
small, repeating values placed on the axis more than once, tend to show continuous in crease or decrease. The result of the self-assessment scale at the end of the application is
that the students' expectations of success are high.
Findings and Suggestions: Half of the students were successful in deciding the
appropriate graph type and justifying the decision. When the created graphics were
examined; it is seen that the ratio of the impressions which are accepted as accurate is
36,66%. The most accurate graphics type is the binary column graph, and the most incor rect type is the line graph. The histogram was found to confuse the students' minds.
While explaining the strengths and weaknesses of graphs, comparisons can be
made by creating different graph types of the same data. In order to eliminate the diffi culties in deciding the type of graph, the superior and weaknesses of the graphs can be
given more when designing textbooks and examples can be presented where comparisons
are made. A similar study can be conducted with prospective teachers to justify the graph
type preference to investigate whether there are errors caused by teachers or not
