This study was conducted to determine the appropriate plant density for seed
production of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) in field and laboratory experiments. It
was aimed to detect the effects of row spacing of 14 and 28 cm and seeding rate of 40,
80, 120, 160 and 200 seeds/m2 on yield, yield components and seed quality of safflower
in the study. Standard germination test, laboratory emergence, field emergence, cool
test, cold test, electrical conductivity test and accelerated ageing test were performed to
determine the seed quality among the seed lots. Results showed that the higher seed
yield per decare was obtained from row spacing of 14 cm. The highest seed yield was
obtained from 14 cm and 200 seed/m2 with 332 kg/da. Increased seeding rates resulted
in enhanced seed yield. The investigated row spacing and seeding rate did not cause a
significant difference for oil and protein contents of seed lots. Seed vigor tests like
laboratory emergence, field emergence and germination after accelerated ageing were
suitable for determining seed quality among the seed lots, while standard germination
test, cool test and cold test were not appropriate. The highest correlation coefficient (r=-
0.616*) for field emergence was detected in electrical conductivity test. The highest
laboratory emergence percentage and germination percentage after accelerated ageing
were determined in 80 seed/m2 and field emergence percentage in 120 seed/m2. It was
concluded that the higher seed yield was obtained from row spacing of 14 cm while 14
cm row spacing and seeding rate of 80-120 seed/m2 should be advised for vigorous seed
production of safflower.
