Specific learning
disorder (SLD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in which cognitive
abnormalities are accompanied by behavioral symptoms, brain cognitive processes and
perception ability are affected. This situation negatively affects the child's self-concept,
future social life and academic success. In our study, which aimed to examine
psychosocial difficulties and related factors in cases with SLD diagnosis, demographic
data, accompanying psychiatric diagnoses of 134 healthy volunteers and children and
adolescent participants with SLD diagnosis and their parents, Piers-Harris Children's
Self-Concept Scale, Child Rearing Attitudes Scale, and Social Support Assessment Scale
for Adolescents, Parenting Styles and Dimensions Scale, the data obtained from the
Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale of the parents, and the results obtained by
comparing them with the control group. In our study, it was determined that another
psychiatric disorder accompanied SLD with a rate of 88.3%, and attention deficit and
hyperactivity disorder was the most common. When the participants were evaluated in
terms of self-concept, the total score obtained from the self-concept scale in the case
group was found to be 50.57 ± 13.65 and significantly lower (60.76 ± 9.47) than the
control group (p <0.001). It was found that increased parental interest and affection had a
positive effect on self-concept and happiness. Self-concept in the child was also found to
be associated with parental anxiety and depression levels. It was determined that as peer
support increased, the self-concept of the child also increased. While there was no
significant difference between the groups in terms of parental styles, it was found that
the child's affection, physical happiness and satisfaction increased with the competent
style, which is a positive parental style. Parental anxiety was found to be inversely
proportional to competent style, which is a positive parenting style, and directly
proportional to authoritarian style, which is a negative parental style. As a result, it is
thought that with the early recognition of SLD and the timely provision of appropriate
support, studies on positive parenting styles, the core concept, academic and social
functions of these cases will change positively
