The marriage relationship has existed for nearly 4000 years. The family formed as a
result of marriage is a relationship system that affects all individuals in it. Family
physicians are the first point of reference in meeting the health needs of the society.
Since problems arising from marriage will disrupt the "mental and social well-being"
in the definition of health of the World Health Organization, it is unimaginable for
family physicians to ignore marital harmony in preventive health services. In this
study, it was aimed to measure the marital adjustment of married individuals who
applied to Eskişehir Osmangazi University Family Medicine Polyclinic by using the
Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale. No significant relationship was found between the
participants' characteristics such as age, gender, age difference between spouses,
smoking, alcohol use, duration of marriage, duration of the interview before marriage,
presence of chronic disease and distance to parents and their marital adjustment.
Significantly lower marital adjustment was found among those who got married by an
arranged marriage compared to those who got married by meeting in the social
environment. It was observed that the marital adjustment of those with an income level
above 6733 TL was significantly higher than those with an income of less than 2067
TL, but the adjustment of individuals with an income below 2067 TL increased as the
duration of marriage increased. It was found that the marital adjustment of those who
have no children is significantly higher than those who have children. It was
determined that there is a weak positive correlation between the increase in the age of
marriage and marital adjustment. It was observed that the marital adjustment of
working women was significantly higher than that of non-working women. Our study
will be a guide to family physicians who carry out primary health care services and
also undertake the duty of preventive medicine by determining some variables that
may affect marital adjustment in solving the adjustment problems of married
individuals
