Many systems and tools used in the industry to collect, store, and share
information do serve companies to take a step forward in the competition. Newer ones are
also added to these systems and tools with the help of technology every day. The quality
and quantity of information gain importance separately. Production of aircraft engine parts
in aviation is generally a shop type production that produces, stores, and shares high quality information rather than quantity. It is more challenging to keep the knowledge
furnished in this type of production, not to be lost, to be stored in a qualified manner, and
to be shared on-site and on time. In this study, the use of ontology and interrelated
information in the information systems in the industry are discussed. As an example, the
introduction of a new aircraft engine part to the manufacturing process is modeled by the
help of ontology.
Aviation manufacturing processes are a large area that includes complex and
exquisite manufacturing processes, including advanced manufacturing technologies,
research, and development activities, and defense technologies. Introduction of a new gas
turbine engine part, which includes a high level of engineering, to manufacturing process
requires the use of qualified and experience-based knowledge. In the application section of
this thesis, a new engine part introduction to the manufacturing process has been modeled
with the help of an ontology-based approach according to the manufacturing readiness
level documents, created by collective work of industry, academia, and American
Department of Defence Manufacturing Technology Group. This ontology-based model has
been used in developing a software application that can be used to orientate process
managers to control manufacturing activities throughout the new part introduction process
