In a life which renews itself every day, the need to use and comprehend
mathematics comes into prominence and increases continuously. One of the primary
targets of education is to raise individuals who can overcome the problems that can
happen in the future throughout their lives. Since solving problem is in the center of
mathematics education program, the mathematics educators give more importance to
this subject, because understanding of mathematical information and the formation of
relation between this information are gained with the process of solving problem.
How to use the ability of solving problem by the students is important as well as
gaining this ability.
The purpose of this work is to determine the aspects of students attending 5th
grade elementary school intended for the process of solving problem in mathematics
lessons. The research has been carried out with 20 students of Gökçepınar
Elementary School and Boğazköy Elementary School in the town called Gercüş of
Batman city. In this work qualitative method was used. In the content of this
research, two teachers were taught for four weeks about the process of solving
problem of Polya (1957) before the application by researcher. Then these teachers
applied the Polya’s (1957) four stepped problem solving process in mathematics
classes for four weeks, activities that will improve the ability of problem solving of
students were also applied. Afterwards, configured problem solving report prepared
by researcher was applied in classroom individually to the students. In configured
problem solving report, with the help of mathematics books in education year 2008-2009 two different four arithmetical operations problems were prepared and intended
for these problems 10 questions were asked to show the views of the students
suitable for each step of solving problem. Four themes were constituted according to
the quality of the questions. With these themes, opinions about the planning,
application and evaluation of the process of students problem solving and also
opinions on the reflection of sensual properties intended for the process of problem
solving are reached.
Data obtained from students were analyzed with document analysis method
and these results were reached; students think that figuring out the problem is
important and after this point they indicated that a plan has to be made to solve the
problem. Students are of opinion that after planning step the process which is applied
has to be considered. Moreover, it can be concluded that after solving the problem
the students feel themselves happy and good and for this reason they become more
eager to solve problems.
