In this study, heat transfer and fluid flow in a channel with an open cavity are
numerically studied by using two and three-dimensional models of various cavity size
and flow parameters. Front (or left) wall of the cavity is kept at constant temperature
while adiabatic boundary condition applied on all unheated sides besides the top and the
bottom faces of the channel. The working fluid that flows through the channel is air, and
Prandtl number (Pr) is also assumed to be 0,71. In this numerical study, the numerical
investigations are performed via FLUENT® code using the SIMPLE algorithm with
Second Order Upwind Scheme adapted for the discretization of momentum and energy
equations. The convergence criterion for continuity, momentum and energy equations
was 10-6. The geometrical parameters used in this work are the cavity width to cavity
height (W/D) ratio of 0,5; 1 and 2, and the channel height to cavity height ratio of 0,25;
0,5; 1 and 2. The flow parameters consists of Reynolds number (Re) of 10, 100, 200 and
Richardson number (Ri) of 0,01; 0,1; 1 and 10. The effect of the cavity and flow
parameters on the stream function and isotherms have also been observed. The mean
Nusselt number is evaluated along the heated (surface) wall of the cavity and the effect
of Richardson and Reynolds numbers, aspect ratio and relative duct dimensions on the
heat transfer is investigated. Seperate regression analysis in terms of W/D, H/D, Re, Ri
parameters have been performed and correlations derived for Nusselt numbers that were
obtained from the 2D and 3D simulations.
