Continuously developing optoelectronic technology needs alternative transparent
conductive oxide (TCO) materials. For this purpose, the effects of magnesium oxide
(MgO) doping on the characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) films have been investigated in
this study. ZnO films are one of the most important members of TCO materials and they
are widely used in optoelectronic technology. An important step to extend the applications
of ZnO-based optoelectronic materials is the realization of band gap engineering. To this
end, ZnO can be alloyed with another high optical band gap compound like MgO to
increase its band gap. By doping ZnO with MgO, the band gap of MgZnO alloys can be
increased by increasing the concentration of MgO. In this study, (MgO)x(ZnO)1-x films
(x varies from 0 to 1) have been produced by sol-gel spin coating technique with different
MgO concentrations on a glass substrate. By changing each parameters of spin coating
technique, the conditions of the best film that produced were determined for each series.
The structural, surface, optical and electrical properties of the films have been
characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron
Microscopy (FESEM), UV-Visible Spectroscopy and Four-Probe Method respectively and
the effects of doping on these properties have been investigated. Which film showed the
best crystallization has been determined from the XRD patterns. It has been observed that
the surface morphology of the MgZnO films was changed by MgO incorporation. Optical
properties of the films have been examined and it has been determined that all films have
direct band structure. Optical band gap values have been found to be between 3.33 and
4.34 eV by optical method. It was observed that the band gap of the (MgO)x(ZnO)1-x films
can be adjusted by increasing the x values from 0 to 1. Four-probe method has been used to
determine the electrical resistivity values of the films and it has been seen that these values
increased by MgO doping. Finally, structural, surface, optical and electrical properties of
the films have been determined to vary according to the dopant concentration.
