ilköğretim I. kademede kazanmaları gereken kazanımların çoğuna sahip olmadıkları,
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the problems encountered during second
grade of mathematics education from the point of view of students and teachers. The
study is designed using qualitative and quantative research techniques. First, a screening
model is used in order to determine mathematics perception levels of the students from
rural areas, than a phenomenological model which is one of the qualitative research
patterns, is used to deeply investigate the problems encountered during mathematic
education in rural areas. Sample of the study consists of 613 8th grade students of
2008-2009 academic years, from the residences outside the city and districts of
Eskisehir, defined as rural areas. Three different samples are used in the study. First
sample consists of 379 8th grade students; second sample consists of six 8th grade
students. Finally, third sample consists of 13 primary school mathematic teachers. In the
study, five data gathering tools that are developed by the researcher are used. Data was
collected through Mathematics Perception Scale, Clinical Interview Form, Observation
Form, Student Diaries, and Teacher Interview Form. As the result of the study, it has
been found that students have positive perception towards mathematics but the majority
of the students from rural areas do not possess sufficient knowledge about most of the
topics that they should have acquire from the first level of primary education, they have
difficulties in problem solving, reasoning, associating and communicating process. In
addition, mathematics teachers who work in rural areas believe that there are problems
in mathematics education in rural areas due to lack of family education, teacher
shortages, technological and economic shortages and for these reasons achievement of
students in their schools cannot get any better.
