The advances in microelectronics used for military applications have resulted in
a need to redesign and improve the quality of the power supplies used in various
applications. Especially, demand for power supply modules with low output voltage and
high current capabilities has increased considerably. Moreover, design of systems
having fast response for load current variations, flexible control architecture enabling
communication, high power conversion efficiency and smaller in size have achieved
importance and precedence. In this project, a high frequency two phase synchronous
DC-DC buck converter topology, which achieves these demands, has been studied and
evaluated. The digital control implementation and evaluations were done using Texas
Instruments product UCD9112 evaluation module. To design the control system, the
open-loop transfer function of the power stage is obtained using the small signal models
of the buck converter. Then, the compensation parameters, which provide the desired
regulation requirements, are found using the analog control approach. Later, these
parameters are used to determine the compensation coefficients required for the digital
control implementation within the UCD9112 digital PWM controller. Finally, a design
with 12 V input and 1.8 V output with 40 A output capability has been evaluated
experimentally. The test results demonstrate the advantages of digital control in the
design of high frequency multiphase synchronous DC-DC converters and show the
potential of such converters in supplying the power requirements of the military loads.
