In this thesis, Co-integration Analysis used for searching the relations among the econometric time series was studied and then Bounding Test Approach for Cointegration was explained. It was studied whether there is a co-integration relation among electricity consumption per capita during 1978-2003 period in Turkey, real gross domestic product, electricity cost and electricity investment series or not.
While analyzing co-integration relation, Johansen (1988) and Johansen and Juselius (1991) method was applied and it was found out that there was a positive relation between consumption and income & investment in the long term; however, it was a reverse relation with the cost. In the long term, when 1% increase in the income rise the electricity consumption 1,79%, 1%increase in the investment effected consumption 1,64%. 1% increase in the cost results in 0,20% decrease in the consumption. Based on these, income elasticity for the long term was determined as 1,79%, and investment elasticity as 1,64%.
Using the bound testing approach developed by Pesaran and the others, the value of F statistic for the trendless model was determined as 6,089. Upper and lower limit values which were 5% significant for this value were defined in order as 3,219 and 4,378. As the calculated F statistic value was bigger than the upper critical value which was in 5% significance level, Null Hypothesis was rejected and it was decided that there was co-integration among the studied variables for the trendless model.
ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lagged) Model (1,1,0,0) was determined considering Akaike Information Criterion and ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lagged) Model (1,0,0,0) based on Schwarz Information Criterion. As the method chosen considering Schwarz Information Criterion was generally used in application, analysis continued for ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lagged) Model (1,0,0,0).
viii
According to the results for ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lagged) Model (1,0,0,0), it was found that an increase in the income and investment rose electricity consumption, and income elasticity was 0,334 and investment elasticity was 0,147 in the long term.
Therefore, 10% increase in the income will result in 3% incresae in the consumption in the long term. Furthermore, it can be added that 10% increase in the investment would rise electricity consumption 1,5%.
To Error Correction Model estimated by ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lagged) Model (1,0,0,0), ECT coefficient variable was (0,231) and found statistically significant. For this reason, it was calculated that disequilibrium in the long term would be corrected 23% in the following period and approximately 4 years were required to provide equilibrium. Income elasticity in the long term was higher than the short term. This meant that income politics had more powerful effects in time. Short term income was statistically significant.
In addition, using VAR and ARIMA methods, electricity consumption per capita was forecasted for 2004-2013 period. It was decided that ARIMA (1,1,1) was the most appropriate method. According to the forecast by using ARIMA (1,1,1), it was forecasted that electricity consumption per capita in 2004 would be 1648,77 kwh.
