Adapting the Kaledo game to Turkish culture and to compare the
effects of the Kaledo game and nutrition education prepared according to the health
belief model with the nutritional self-efficacy, attitude and behavior and weight loss
in overweight and obese children.
Method: This research is methodological in terms of adapting Kaledo game
to Turkish culture; It is a randomized controlled experimental study in terms of
comparing the effect of Kaledo game and nutrition education prepared according to
Health Belief Model on nutritional self-efficacy, attitude and behavior and weight
loss. The population of the research constituted in 2019-2020 academic year Hoca
Ahmet Yesevi Secondary School, Kocatepe Secondary School and Neriman İbrahim
Küçükkurt Secondary School and overweight and obese students in the 5th, 6th and
7th grades (n=543). There are three groups in the study: game (n=38), education
(n=35), control (n=53). The data were obtained with a personal information form,
child nutrition self-efficacy scale, nutrition attitude scale, and nutrition behavior
scale. Scales were applied and body mass index values were calculated by measuring
height and weight in all three groups at the beginning and at the end of the study.
Result: The Content Validity Index of the Kaledo game is 0,98. It was
determined that there was no significant change in the between-group and in-group
evaluations in terms of nutritional self-efficacy and behavior. Group and time main
effects and interaction were not statistically significant on nutritional self-efficacy
and behavior. While the nutritional attitude scores did not differ between the groups,
it was determined that the students in the play group exhibited more positive eating
attitudes after the play intervention than before, in the in-group evaluations. There
was no significant change in body mass index after the game and education
intervention compared to the pre-intervention. In addition, the main effect of time
and group and interaction were not found statistically significant on body mass
vii
index. It was determined that body mass index z-score values were lower in the
training group after the training than before.
Conclusion: Kaledo game provided language validity in Turkish society.
Kaledo game did not have an effect on the nutritional self-efficacy and behavior of
the students, and the body mass index and body mass index z-score values. After the
game, the students had a more positive eating attitude. Nutrition education prepared
in line with the Health Belief Model did not cause a change in nutritional selfefficacy,
attitude and behavior, and body mass index values, but the body mass index
z-score of the students decreased after the training
