The purpose of this study is to determine the opinions of special
education teachers on sexual abuse and sexual education for students with autism
spectrum disorders (ASD).
Method: In this study basic qualitative research method, which is one of the
qualitative research designs, is used. The participants of the study are 19 special
education teachers who have been working with students with ASD or have worked
before. The data of the research were collected through semi-structured interviews with
the participants. The data obtained were analyzed according to the content analysis
technique by using the Nvivo-12 program. As a result of the data analysis, six main
themes and twelve sub-themes were reached.
Results: The findings of the study show that the participants observed various
inappropriate sexual behaviors, including hugging, kissing and masturbation, in their
students with ASD. Almost all of the participants stated that students with ASD should
be given sexual education, but most of them did not have any practice towards sexual
education. Most of the participants stated that they do not see themselves competent in
providing students with ASD sexual education/gaining protection from sexual abuse
skills and they need the support of experts in this field. Most of the participants stated
that students with ASD have a high risk of sexual abuse. The number of participants
who have stated that they cannot detect sexual abuse is higher than those who have
stated that they can. The participants expressed the most difficult situation for them
about sexual abuse as sharing the abuse with the family and the abuser being a member
of the family.

Conclusion and Suggestions: As a result, the participants stated that students
with ASD have a high risk of sexual abuse and these students need sexual education.
Participants do not have enough information about providing sexual education to
students with ASD, realizing sexual abuse, and the process after noticing it. It is
recommended that teachers need to be informed about this issue through in-service
trainings and seminars and courses for sexual education should be included in the
special education teacher training undergraduate program. In addition, it may be
suggested that special education teachers and guidance counselors prepare education
programs on sexual education and sexual abuse and offer them to the parents of students
with ASD as part of family education. In addition, it is recommended to conduct studies
with different methods and research groups on this subject in future studies
