In this study, the effect of novel synthesized five Schiff base compounds, that have different functional groups, ?1,5-bis[2-(2- hydroxybenzyliden amino)phenoxy]-3-oxopentane (D1), 1,5-bis [2-(5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylidenamino)phenoxy]-3-oxopentane (D2), 1,5-bis[2-(5-bromo-2- hydroxybenzylidenamino)phenolxy]-3-oxopentane (D3), 1,4-bis[2-(2-hydroxybenzylidenamino)phenoxy]butane (B1) and 1,4-bis[2-(5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylden amino)phenoxy]butane (B2) ? on the corrosion behaviour of mild steel and aluminium in 0.1 M HCl media were investigated by using potentiodynamic polarisation (PP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) methods. Results of potentiodynamic polarisation measurements indicate that all used in this study Schiff bases were acting as inhibitors for both of aluminium and mild steel. All electrochemical measurements show that inhibition efficiencies increases with increasing inhibitor concentration. This reveals that inhibitive actions of inhibitors were mainly due to adsorption on mild steel and aluminium surfaces. Adsorption of these inhibitors obeys Temkin adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption equilibrium constant and free energy of adsorption of the related Schiff bases were calculated using Temkin adsorption isotherm. It has been reached as a conclusion that the results of scaining electron microscope methods (SEM) also fit to electrochemical methods and the order for B1 and B2, whose inhibitor efficiency has been studied for both metals, is B2>B1, for D1, D2 and D3, whose inhibitor efficiency has been studied for aluminium, is D3>D2>D1. It was found that all studied Schiff bases behave as inhibitor and the protection ability of them depend on the molecular structures, species of metals and the surface charge of metals.
