In this study, the inhibition effect of novel synthesized Schiff base compounds, that are in different structures − 1,3-Bis[2-(5-hydroxybenzylidenamino) phenoxy]propane (P1), 1,3-Bis[2-(5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylidenamino)phenoxy] propane (P2), 1,3–Bis[2-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidenamino)phenoxy]propane (P3), 1,8-Bis[2-(5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylidenamino)phenoxy]-3,6-dioxooctane (T2), 1,8-Bis[2-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidenamino)phenoxy]-3,6-dioxooctane (T3) − on the corrosion behaviour of aluminium in 0.1 M HCl media were investigated by using electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarisation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarisation) and surface analyses (scanning electron microscope, electrochemical kuartz mikrobalance) methods.
Results of potentiodynamic polarisation measurements have indicated that all Schiff bases, whose inhibitor efficiency is studied, hold the inhibitor distinction for aluminium, compounds are cathodic inhibitors and inhibitor efficiency increases with increasing inhibitor concentration. It’s determined that the increase of inhibitor efficiency by concentration results from the adsorption of molecules to metal surface, and the adsorption fits to Temkin adsorption isotherm, adsorption equilibrium constant and free energy of adsorption, which are thermodynamic parameters of adsorption has been calculated by benefiting from the drawn adsorption isotherms.
Results obtained from electrochemical kuartz microbalance (EQCM) revealed that all investigated Schiff bases decrease metal dissolution. Surface images obtained with scaning electron microscope determined by verifying these results that inhibitors decrease the dissolution of metal, prevent the corrosion.
The order of inhibition effect of these compounds was found to be P3>P2>P1 and T3>T2.
