In this study, a dc-dc converter that provides constant and stable output voltage from
variable input voltage that is obtained from fuel-cells is designed and implemented. This
converter system will be used to produce utility voltage for residential applications.
Therefore, a fuel-cell which can give an output voltage in a range of 36-80 V is used as
input source for the digitally-controlled boost converter and the boost converter is
designed to produce a stable 80 V at the output. The control system of the boost
converter is realized using PIC18F4520 microcontroller. Initially, by obtaining the
small signal equivalent circuit of the boost converter and by the help of this obtained
circuit the output-to-input and output-to-control transfer functions are found to realize a
stable control. Then, control parameters of boost converter are obtained via
mathematical analysis techniques and simulations which are used to design control
systems. These parameters are applied digitally by using PIC18F4520. Finally, a
prototype converter system is implemented at 1 kW scale.
