Textile dyeing wastewater has become problems because of their color, recalcitrant structure and potential toxicity to animals and human beings. This study focused on the treatment of two azo dyes, Remazol Red 3BS and Burazol Blue ED, using a sequential anaerobic/aerobic biological system. In addition the conditions (dye concentration, cosubstrat, inoculum and time) for treatment of synthetic wastewater were optimized under batch conditions using full factorial design. In both batch systems, the highest color removal was determined at 0.3 g/l dye concentration. COD removal increased with the increase in the amount of glucose. In continuous system, up-flow anaerobic packed bed reactor (YAADY) and stirred tank reactor (SKTR) was used as sequential. From 0.1 to 0.3 g/L with varying concentrations of Remazol Red 3BS and Burazol Blue ED dyes were used as the synthetic wastewater. Effects of operating parameters on methane gas production with the removal of color and COD were evaluated. Treating synthetic dye wastewater with the combination anaerobic and aerobic process showed that the majority of colors and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were removed by the anaerobic process. On the other hand the increased toxicity level due to aromatic amines occurred in the anaerobic stage reduced in the subsequent aerobic process. The results suggested that under anaerobic conditions, the azo dyes were reduced and the aromatic amines were generated by the bacterial biomass. For Remazol Red 3BS, at 120 hours retention time, 0.8 g COD/(l day) organic load and 0.2 g/l initial dye concentration, 70.38% of total color and 93.59% of total COD removal has been observed. For Burazol Blue ED, at 0.795 g COD/(l day) organic load, 0.25 g/l initial dye concentration and 120 hours retention time, 71.75% of total color and 92.36% of total COD removal has achieved.
