In this work the Schiff bases prepared from 2-hydroxy-1-naphtaldehyde (10) and unsubstituted aniline and o-, m-, p-,CH3 anilines are reacted with iodine in the catalysis of clinoptilolite (natural zeolite) and the zeolite 5A (synthetic zeolite) in order to synthesize (1,2,3,4) iodine substituted Schiff bases. The reaction mixture is refluxed at 100°C in tolene and controlled by TLC. The reaction was stopped after 24 hours. The reaction medium pH was 5.0-5.5. The products (5,6,7,8,9) are isolated after several preparative TLC purifications and crystallization from ethanol. OHCHNR(1) R=H(2) R=o-CH3(3) R=m-CH3(4) R=p-CH3
The isolated products structures are determined by IR, UV, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and Mass spectroscopy and chemical analysis. Under our reaction conditions it’s found that the iodine is substituted to the phenyl ring of the naphtholic Schiff bases. Theoritical calculation results were compared with the experimental results.
