Bu tezin amacı, Türk çocuk ve gençlik edebiyatı yazarlarından Kemalettin Tuğcu ile Đngiliz edebiyatı yazarlarından Charles Dickens’ın eserlerinde yer alan toplum eleştirisini karşılaştırmalı olarak ele almaktır. Bu nedenle ilgili çalışmada, öncelikle çocuk ve gençlik edebiyatının kavramsal tanımlaması yapılmış ve genel edebiyat içinde yer alan eleştiri kültürünün bu alandaki yansımaları incelenmiştir.
Bu çalışmada, Kemalettin Tuğcu’nun “Satılan Çocuk” ve “Küçük Serseri” ile Charles Dickens’ın “Oliver Twist” ve “Büyük Umutlar” adlı eserlerinde yer alan yetim, şiddet gören, çalıştırılmaya zorlanan ve aynı zamanda yoksul olan çocukların toplum eleştirisi ekseninde ele alınması hedeflenmiştir. Böylece seçmiş olduğumuz eserlerdeki toplum eleştirisinin ortaya çıkarılabilmesi için eleştiri türlerinden pozitivist, sosyolojik ve tarihsel inceleme yöntemlerinden yararlanılmıştır.
Tezin sonuç bölümünde, Dickens ve Tuğcu’nun toplumsal eleştiriye ışık tutan eserlerinde benzer noktalara değindikleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu nedenle farklı coğrafyalardan, farklı dönemlerden gelmelerine karşın Dickens ile Tuğcu’nun benzer sorunlar ve durumlar karşısında ortak tavırlar sergiledikleri sonucuna varılmıştır.
The purpose of this thesis is to compare the two writers, Kemalettin Tuğcu and Charles Dickens, in terms of their points of view in social criticism. Therefore the conceptual definition of Children’s and Youth Literature is primarily mentioned in this study. Then as a part of general literature, the reflections of criticism types are dealt with in this concerned field as the main aim of this study.
In this study; the common aspects of social criticism in terms of orphan children who are mostly abused, forced to work, and also poor are compared in Kemalettin Tuğcu’s “Satılan Çocuk” and “Küçük Serseri” and Charles Dickens’s “Great Expectations” and “Oliver Twist”. So it is necessary to use the methods of positivist, historical and social criticisms in order to compare and contrast the works chosen in this study.
The result of this comparative study has showed that the two writers have dealt with the similar points of social criticism in their works although they came from different countries and lived in different periods of time. Thus it has been observed that Kemalettin Tuğcu and Charles Dickens share the same points of social criticism with their similar points of view.
