(tmen), 1,3-propandiamin (pen), 2,2-dimetilpropan-1,3-diamin (dmpen), 1,10-
pzdka)2(pen)2]·2H2O (5), {[Cu(μ-pzdka)(tmen)]·H2O}n (6), {[Cu(μ-pzdka)(bipy)]·H2O}n
In this study, eight mixed ligand complexes of Cu(II) with pyrazine-2,3-
dicarboxylic acid (H2pzdka) have been synthesized and characterized by using
elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibilities, IR and UV-Vis. spectroscopy and single
crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Thermal behaviours of the complexes were
simultaneously determined by thermal analysis techniques (TG, DTG and DTA). As a
secondary ligand, bidentate manner ethylendiamine (en), N,N′-dimethylethylendiamine
(dmen), N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylendiamine (tmen), 1,3-propanediamine (pen), 2,2-
dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine (dmpen), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2′-bipyridine
(bipy) ligands which have N donor atom and monoethanolamine (mea) which has both
N and O donor atoms have been chosed in the sytheses of the complexes.
In the synthesized complexes, the formula of complexes as found as
[Cu(pzdka)(H2O)(en)2]·H2O (1), [Cu(pzdka)(H2O)(dmpen)2] (2),
[Cu(pzdka)(phen)2]·5,5·H2O (3), [Cu2(μ-pzdka)2(H2O)2(dmen)2]·6·H2O (4), {[Cu(μ-
pzdka)(pen)]·H2O}2 (5), {[Cu(μ-pzdka)(tmen)]·H2O}n (6), {[Cu(μ-pzdka)(bipy)]·H2O}n
(7) and [Cu(μ3-pzdka)(mea)]n (8) and the pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylate ligand exhibit four
different coordination modes, monodentate, bidentate, tridentate-μ2 and tetradentate-μ3.
Pzdka is coordinated to Cu atom with its oxygen atom of carboxylate group as a
monodentate in the 1 and 2 complexes and with the nitrogen atom of pyrazine ring and
oxygen atom of carboxylate group as a bidentate manner in the 3 and 4 complexes. In
complexes 5, 6 and 7, pzdka ligand is coordinated through nitrogen atom of pyrazine
ring, oxygen atom of carboxylate group and symmetry related oxygen atom of other
carboxylate group as a tridentate bridge. In the complex 8, pzdka ligand acts as a
tetradentate bridge by nitrogen atom of pyrazine ring, oxygen atom of carboxylate
group and symmetry related two oxygen atoms of other carboxylate group. Distorted
octahedral (1-4, 8) and distorted square pyramidal geometries (5-7) are completed with
two nitrogen atoms (N and O for mea) of bidentate neutral ligands and these complexes
exhibit mononuclear, dinuclear and polynuclear structures.
The thermal analysis curves of the complexes exhibit three decomposition
stages. The first endothermic stage corresponds to the loss of the water molecules. The
following stages are related to the partly or completely release of ligands. In the
exothermic last stages, remaining organic part was abruptly burnt. The final
decomposition products are CuO.
