The Mudurnu-Göynük Basin located on the Sakarya continent reveal significant
geological information regarding the closure of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean during Jurassic to
Eocene. Field work and the stratigraphic sections measured between the town of Göynük and
Himmetoğlu village in the southern part of the Mudurnu-Göynük Basin in this study revealed
the presence of Yenipazar, Seben, and Taraklı formations belonging to Gölpazarı Group;
Selvipınar limestone; Kızılçay formation; Halidiye formation of the Şehren Group; as well as
the Değirmenözü of the Yenipazar and Hisarözü members of the Seben formations during a
time span from Lower Cretaceous to Middle Eocene.
Characteristics of the thick sequences represented by the Yenipazar formation revealed
that the study area was a deep marine environment during the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian Maastrichtian). The sedimentological features of the Seben formation showed a steady-phase
when there were no income of clastic material into the basin. Taraklı formation possesses a
deltaic character which was formed on the continental settings were formed as a consequence
of the retreat of the sea towards the North and on where fluviatile sediments of the Kızılçay
formation were deposited upto the sea-shore. Selvipınar limestone was formed in a reefal
environment developed in a shallow-marine setting which was formed as an outcome of a
north-retreating sea. The first continental sediments in the region which were formed as a
result of the regression started during the Upper Cretaeous, belonged to Kızılçay formation
which reveals the characteristics of a meandering river. It was that regression caused the
shore-line to retreat towards the North. Marine sequences were continued to be deposited on
the Upper Cretaceous sediments in the northern parts from a paleo shore-line corresponding to
the present-day Göynük Creek while regressive sequences of the Taraklı and Kızılçay
formations were deposited in the northern parts of the basin.
Sakarya kıtası üzerinde bulunan Mudurnu-Göynük Havzası, Jura-Eosen zaman aralığında,
Neo-Tetis Okyanusunun kapanma evrimini ortaya koyan önemli jeolojik bulgular sunar.
Seben formasyonunun sedimantolojik özellikleri havzaya detritik malzeme geliminin
