Modern kentlerde olusturulan,
yerelliğin ve çesitliliğin gittikçe azaldığı, yeni mekansal kurgular, zamanla yok-yerlere
dönüsmektedir. Özellikle havalimanları, garlar, alısveris merkezleri, otoyollar, “yerolmayan”
kavramının en belirgin örneklerindendirler. Buralar bulundukları coğrafi
bölgeye, kültürel değerlere, yasanmıslığa, kısacası bulundukları yere ait değildirler,
sistem olarak tek tiptirler. Hacimsel büyüklük, kullanılan malzeme, sistemin
devamlılığını sağlayan elemanlar (kontrol, yönlendirme, bilgilendirme, bekletme,
eğlendirme vb.), tabelalar, isaret levhaları, çizgileri, hız sınırının belirtilmesi her yerde
Throughout the history, when the human and his environmental effects are
investigated, the arise of the periodically shifted and rapidly developed cities and new
urban places are seen. At the present day, human and the space around him with its
quality and quantity, in other words “the concept of place” is face with several
modifications. Decreasing locality and variety the new spatial constructs, which are
formed in modern cities, are turning into non-spaces. Especially airports, train stations,
shopping malls, and highways are the most specific examples of the “non-place”
concept. Being not belong to their region, cultural values, or the place, these buildings
are one-type standard. Everywhere the spatial extent, used materials, the elements
which are keeping the continuity of the system (control, orientation, information,
spooling, and entertainment etc.), signs, alignments, and the speed limiter signs are the
same.
Being the threshold between the cities, the airports are “non-places”. Having the
program of an airport terminal, this buildings with widely floated spaces make the
people feel a emotional emptiness in the quick passage of time. This sense of emptiness
is caused from the spatial construction, which the person cannot take up references or
haven’t experienced before.
Glass materials bring new expansions to design area with the development of
technology and the growing concepts are beginning to change the construction of space.
Providing the transition between transparency and solidity in architecture, glass
materials bring various expansions to its users by making psychological effects. Using
the glass materials, people expands his visual area, his “Looking-Scophilia instinct”
begins to satisfy, and the trauma of the sense of placelessness, that new urban
programmatic create, turns into looking pleasure.
In this study, the spatial construct of two airport terminals, both of whom
designs are acquired via architectural contests and lately built in Turkey, and the effect
of glass are investigated. The reason of choosing Đzmir Adnan Menderes and Ankara
Esenboğa Airports is their effort of being related to its place by its construction of inner
and outer space, on the contrary of the placelessness of common airport terminals.
