In this study, some controller design and robustness analysis problems are
modeled as nonlinear programming problems. These nonlinear programming problems
are solved by modified subgradient algorithm which constructs the dual problem as an
intermediate step. This algorithm yields a solution with no duality gap for a large class
of constrained problems and does not require any convexity and differentiability
assumptions. Firstly, sliding mode control problem is modeled as a nonlinear
programming problem. In this realization, basic philosophy of sliding mode control,
which is steering the state of dynamic system towards a stable sliding surface and then
driving the system state towards the origin while keeping it in a neighborhood of this
surface, is preserved. In this new approach, it is possible to impose bounds on the
system input and specify approaching rates to the sliding surface. Validity of the
approach is illustrated by stabilizing inverted pendulum and acrobot systems using
simulations. Secondly, a new approach is taken at the real structured singular value
computation problem which is a popular tool for testing robustness of a system.
Currently, some software packages propose lower and upper bounds to calculate the real
structured singular value. But, the gap between the lower and upper bounds is large for
many problems. Motivated by this, a flexible nonlinear programming model is
proposed for lower bound of real structured singular value problem, and solved by the
modified subgradient algorithm.
