The Karacasu Cross Graben is located in the Aegean Extensional Province and connected from south with high angle to one of the main morphologic element of the region, the E-W trending Büyük Menderes Graben. This study aims to clarify the sedimentary evolution of the deposits cropped out in the Karacasu graben and hence to contribute the understanding of tectonic evolution of the region.
For this aim the sedimentary succession within the investigated area was defined in accordance with the current stratigraphic nomenclature rules and the existing geological maps were revised. In order to enlighten the depositonal environment of the sedimentary units litology, sedimentary structures and fabrics, and fossil contents were observed and samples for various purposes were collected in 10 measured stratigraphic sections. After the preparation of thin sections, some petrographic investigations were carried out under the microscope to define the minerology and fabrics of the samples. The minerology of the clay-sized fraction was investigated by X-Ray diffractometry tecniques.
Collective evaluation of the data from the stratigraphical, sedimentological, paleontological and minerological studies indicated that the sedimentary succession cropped out in the graben could be divided into two parts, each reflecting different tectonic frames. The Late Miocene(?)-Early Pliocene-aged Dandalas group was formed dominantly from fluvial deposits in lower parts and passes gradually to lacustrine sediments towards top. This unit seems to be formed in completely different situation from the recent graben morphology. Petrographic findings, sedimentological observations and minerology of clay-sized material prove that at the early stages of the deposition, the provenance was dominated by ultramafics in the eastern and metamorphics in the western part of the region. The palaeo-climate was hot and subarid. Sedimentological and paleontological properties of the deposits in the upper parts of this unit, shows the development of a lake, which was not so saline. Sedimentary petrography and clay minerology points out that the provenance and climate were not changed so much during the deposition of the whole succession.
The Karacasu formation which yields an Early Pleistocene mammalian age from its stratigraphicaly lowermost parts forms the real basin fill deposits that has been developed within the recent tectonic and geomorphological frame. The palaeo-current directions, geomorphological, sedimentological and minerological findings shows that this sequence was formed in alluvial fan environment under the control of basin bounding faults of the present-day graben.
