Enhancement of heat transfer constitutes one of the major research fields in the
academic and industrial are due to its importance in economic end efficient design of
heat exchange apparatus. Enhancement of heat transfer is possible by means of
increasing the rate of heat transfer through a unit heat transfer surface. There are various
means of enhancing heat transfer.Enhacement methods aim increasing either the area of
the heat transfer surface, or the turbulence level, or the mean duration of contact
between fluid particles and the surface. Increasing the surface area, i.e. the use of
extended surfaces, alone, requires consumption of more materials, more manufacturing
work, and more space occupied by the heat exchange equipment, when compared to
techniques aiming the increase of heat transfer coefficient. In this study, the
enhancement technique tested aims on keeping the fluid particles in contact with the
heat transfer surface for longer periods, thus allowing them to exchange more energy
during this elongated stay of the fluid in the heat exchanger tube, while increasing the
magnitude of turbulence, as well.Internal flow in a circular tube is considered as the
basis to test the target. The second step in the development of the technique is inserting
a cylindrical solid rod concentrically in the tube, thus creating an annulus flow between
the tube and the insert. The last step of the technique is adding a helical fin which fits
tight in the annulus and directs the flow through the helical channel confined between
the outer tube, the rod insert and the helical fin. Fort his purpose, a tube with specified
diameter and wall thickness is considered first. Then solid cylindrical rods of five
different diameters are inserted concentrically within the tube and annular flow is tested
for each configuration. Finally, the helical fin is added in the annular gap and its
inflence is observed. The thickness of the fin is kept constant while the pitch of helical
coil is adjusted to three different values. All configurations considered are analysed
numerically using the FLUENT software package and tested experimentally as well.
Results show good agreement between numerical and experimental analysis for flow
channels of mini sizes. When the channel hydraulic diameter is decreased to micro
sizes, numerical results deviate from experimental values, indicating a discrepancy in
the physical mechanisms dominating fluid flow and heat transfer.
