Multivariate ore grade and reserve estimation was made with drilling core values,
taken from MAŞ Beylikova Magnesite Open-Pit Mine, in order to integrate
geostatistical estimation methods and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with its
visual and spatial query capabilities in 3D environment, in this study.
Digital terrain model was generated in GIS environment, from the topographic
map, which was taken from the mining company. Bore hole locations, drilling core
values and cutting depths were also deployed to the spatial database, which is built up in
GIS. Ore impurity grade values were analyzed and lognormal distributions were
observed. Additionally, semivariogram and cross-semivariogram models, which were
used in cokriging, were determined, for these impurities.
Inverse distance weighting, ordinary kriging, simple kriging, ordinary cokriging
with two variables for two different variable combinations, and ordinary cokriging with
three variables were used in ore reserve and grade estimation. Spatial queries were
applied to block models in GIS platform, due to discover ore-body location, shape and
quantity. Afterwards, accuracy assessment, cross-validation and comparison procedures
were applied to the estimation results, with correlation coefficients, weighted square
error, and mean standardized square error values.
On the basis of comparison and accuracy assessment analyses, ordinary cokriging
in three variables was evaluated as the appropriate and accurate approach for ore grade
distribution and reserve estimation in Beylikova Open-Pit Mine. On the contrary, simple
kriging was determined as a proper method for point estimation, and not proper for
block estimation, for magnesite ore.
