Eskişehir’in bir
With the industrial revolution and increasing economic competition be among
countries, the field of education has also been affected by these situations. Mathematics, on the
other hand, has been one of the most affected areas. A model has been developed by the United
States, who thought it lagged behind in that competition, and this model has soon affected many
countries, including Europe. This method consists of the first letters of the branches of Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and aims to teach these branches in an
interdisciplinary manner as the name implies. Turkey is among the developing countries and is
in need of various developments in the field of education. The average of mathematics courses
of Turkey in national and international examinations has been very low. Students memorize
mathematics and see it as a rote field. This situation, which originates from the abstract side of
mathematics, actually covers that mathematics is a language in the explanatory position of many
sciences. In this study, using STEM method, the effect of this method on students' mathematics
attitude, knowledge and skills was investigated and STEM activities process was examined.
Method: This study, which will be carried out with the active participation of teachers
and students, has been applied with the Action research method which is one of the qualitative
research methods. Classical action research and Individual action research, of which Action
research types, has been used. The sample of this study, which was applied to 11th grade
students of Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in a district of Eskişehir has been
chosen by purposeful sampling method. It was carried out during the 2018-2019 school year.
Five activities have been created in accordance with the 11th grade curriculum and the Action
Plan, which was prepared as a theoretically lecture method and STEM activities, was
implemented. During the process, observations were made by the researcher and the registry
was kept. At the end of the term, portfolios were collected from the activities of the students
4
and the group was divided into 2 and focus group interviews were conducted. At the end of the
semester, students were given an exam consisting of PISA exams.
Results: In the light of the data collected during the course of the research, although
there were no great steps taken in the mathematics knowledge and skills of the students, studies
on the development of metacognitive skills of the students positively affected the students. They
have acquired knowledge not only in mathematics but also in many areas. Students' attitudes
were also positively affected and they wanted to do activities and behaved willingly many
times. The processing of course in this manner destroyed the students' course scheme and their
perspectives widened.
Conclusion and Suggestions:The first sub-problem of the research on the effect of
knowledge and skills usage of students has been moved to higher levels and heir narrow
perspective on the concept of the lesson has expanded. As in the second sub-problem,
mathematics attitude effect, there were positive developments. The students wanted to do
STEM activities and preferred them. STEM process students more easily remembered and more
participatory and active courses in these courses
