In this thesis, porous carbon material, silica and carbon were simultaneously formed
together in the same pot using the One Pot Method. Carbonization of the obtained sample
was achieved and porous carbon material was obtained by removing silica from the structure.
Sucrose (C12H22O11) as carbon source and Tetraethylortosilicate (TEOS) as silica source
were used in porous carbon synthesis. After the porous carbon was obtained, it was modified
with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), a cationic surfactant, to improve its
surface properties. Modified porous carbon was used for the adsorption of Chromium (VI)
[Cr(VI)] from aqueous solution. The obtained materials were characterized by nitrogen
adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron
microscope (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform
infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyzes. For the adsorption of Cr(VI) with the modified
porous carbon, the amount of CTAB to be used for the modification was determined first.
The effects of initial Cr(VI) concentration, solution pH, temperature, contact time and
adsorbent amount on the adsorption of Cr(VI) with modified porous carbon were
investigated. It was observed that the maximum Cr(VI) removal was at pH = 2. Adsorption
reached equilibrium within 4 hours. Various kinetic models have been used to describe the
adsorption kinetics and the Pseudo second order kinetic model has a good fit. Langmuir and
Freundlich isotherm models were applied to the experimental equilibrium data and the
Langmuir equation was determined as the most suitable isotherm model. The maximum
adsorption capacity was found to be 185,94 mg / g at 25oC
