The main purpose of this thesis is to obtain the numerical solutions of some
nonlinear partial differential equations which are modelled for a quantitative description
of physical phenomena. For this purpose, the finite element method that is used widely
in numerical solutions of differential equations is employed by dealing with Advectiondiffusion,
Burger and Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations.
In the application of the numerical method, firstly, the time discretization of the
equations is achieved by using Taylor’s expansion. In the finite element method, a
uniform partition of the solution domain is considered for the space discretization.
Then the finite element methods of Galerkin and collocation are applied on the timediscreted
equation system respectively. In the solution of these equations, quadratic,
cubic and quintic B-spline functions are chosen as the basis functions and system of
equations was obtained. The Thomas algorithms are used for the solutions of the these
systems.
The present methods given by the usage of B-splines in several degrees are
tested on different problems. The errors of numerical methods are shown by 2
L and
∞
L error norms. Stability of finite-difference equations which is obtained from
numerical methods is implemented by using the von Neumann method. In addition, the
obtained results are both compared with each other and some other works from the
literature. Then the advantages and the disadvantages of the present methods are
discussed.
