Romantik temaların her birinin başlı başına birer
çalışma konusu olması, bu çalışmanın “arzu” teması etrafında sınırlandırılma
sebebidir.
Romanticism as a literary movement is still a matter of debate because it has
many opposite meanings and its extend is uncertain. The difficulty of deciding
whether a novel is romantic or not is also ensue from the same reason. The fact that
each of the romantic themes is a subject of study in itself is the reason why this study
is limited around the theme of “desire”. The choice of desire amongst various themes
such as nature, longing, history, mystery, lyricism and nationalism stems from the
existing effort of self-discovery on the basis of romanticism. Because the romantic,
in his journey of self-discovery, re-realized nature, understood the value of his past,
found the power to destroy the past in order to establish the future and tried to
express all of these by highlighting his emotions. Thus, the journey of self-discovery
in order to know both apparent and what is behind it is transformed into a desire to
change himself and the world.
In this study, in order to determine the place of “desire” theme in
romanticism, firstly the definition of the movement and the limits of this definition
are mentioned; then its historical development is discussed in the context of the three
great romanticisms - England, Germany and France. By mentioning the features of
romanticism in general, the concept of “desire" is given with its philosophical
background and three basic desires are identified with the title "Desire as a Romantic
Theme", and supported with examples from Turkish novels. The aim of the study is
to establish the relationship between Turkish novel and Romanticism through
“desire" and to evaluate the process from Felatun Bey ve Rakım Efendi to the
